Worked for the Governor’s Office of Energy Management & Conservation writing case studies, giving presentations, and promoting green building and energy-efficient design. Edited 100-page green building guide Using LEED-NC in Colorado: Tips, Resources & Examples. Partnered with organizations to host and sponsor green building workshops for school districts, state and local governments and building professionals across Colorado. Wrote content for website and managed grants.

Delivered energy efficiency services and incentives to residential and commercial customers. Managed contractors, met with customers and developed energy assessments to encourage customers to complete energy efficiency improvements. Tracked and reported results of energy efficiency programs. Worked as marketing engineer for the Rebuild Colorado program, for the Governor’s Office of Energy Management & Conservation. Developed and managed high performance design program. Wrote case studies, press releases and newsletters. Developed and continually updated website content. Coordinated, promoted, and advertised workshops on high performance design and the LEED rating system. Wrote grants. Provided scope of work and oversight for contractors. For the Fort Collins Utilities, worked with Doug Swartz to develop 80 homeowners reports for the New Home Study. Performed a survey of benchmarking tools and approaches for Gary Schroeder. Helped facilitate New Home Stakeholder’s Group and researched high performance home recognition programs.
Assisted in development of pre-feasibility studies for school districts as part of the Rebuild Colorado program, as a subcontractor to Trident Energy. Also performed initial contacts of school districts to develop interest in program offerings.
Co-authored E Source report on advances in control and communication systems for distributed resources. Included review of available products and case studies, and functional specifications under development. Also, performed update of fuel cell development status by manufacturer for E Source Distributed Energy web site.

Researched and wrote report for Distributed Energy series subscribers on the topic of opportunities and barriers for using standby generators as distributed energy technology. Surveyed utilities and gathered data about number of customers and capacity enrolled, and number of times each program was invoked. Reported on latest developments in voluntary load curtailment programs, backup generator programs and generator aggregation efforts. Presented research at three conferences. Wrote various articles for bi-weekly electronic newsletter and fielded e-mail and telephone questions from Distributed Energy series subscribers both nationally and internationally. Performed energy engineering for various clients:
•    For Fort Collins Utilities, performed analysis of data on home energy use and physical features. Developed system to automate data analysis and storage. (May 1999 to July 1999)
•    Provided assistance to state agencies interested in energy performance contracting for the Colorado Office of Energy Conservation and as subcontractor to E-Cube (June 1997 to July 1999). Developed contacts in state agencies, performed mini-audits of facilities. Wrote prefeasibility studies which identified and described energy retrofit opportunities, project cost and savings estimates, and description of potential energy performance contract scope.Worked with agencies to develop RFP for energy performance contracting. Agencies included universities, hospitals, community colleges, correctional facilities, recreational facilities and office buildings.
Developed a computer project database, wrote project summaries, and assisted OEC with the development of standardized documents (RFP, contracts, controlled maintenance forms). Also developed materials for presentations to agencies, annual State Buildings Program meetings, and other meetings.
Researched and wrote articles for E Source about latest developments in energy-efficient technologies, including Commissioning Existing Buildings and Line Voltage Thermostats for Electric Resistance Heating (September 1996 to May 1997). Developed comprehensive analysis of recent measured results of actual buildings for commissioning report. Worked with manufacturers of thermostats to have their thermostats tested for inclusion in the thermostat report.
Assisted in the research, writing, organization and production of an Electric Power Research Institute manual, Educational Facilities Equipment Handbook for E4 (May 1996 to August 1996). Wrote sections for window film retrofits, lighting case studies, efficient office equipment, building recommissioning, energy audits, energy management systems, and how to accurately estimate plug loads.

Researched and wrote articles and books identifying opportunities and standards for energy-efficient technologies. Co-authored and managed development of books: 1993 Space Heating Technology Atlas, 1994 Residential Appliances Technology Atlas, and 1995 Commercial Space Cooling & Air Handling Atlas. Authored articles on topics such as building commissioning, portable data loggers, and efficient unitary equipment. Gathered information through surveys of recent research and interviews. Developed national and international network of contacts of utility representatives, manufacturers, and technology users. Developed updated information on regulatory programs, documented performance, and comparison of available technologies. Developed project tracking mechanisms to ensure on-time project completion. Also responsible for presenting technical findings at annual E Source conferences and at other conferences.

Performed various consulting jobs including:
•    Worked with engineering team to develop demand-side management tool for analyzing impact of energy-efficiency initiatives in residential buildings for Ontario Hydro.
•    Evaluated and compared residential energy analysis software and HVAC system design and sizing programs.
•    Obtained training and certification as blower door operator and infrared camera operator for use in energty analyses. Assisted in blower door tests of several houses. Researched and wrote article on weatherization of existing homes, including: use of blower doors, measuring pressure differentials, air-tightening and insulation.

•    Commercial building HVAC diagnostics
Developed software for commercial building HVAC system diagnostics program. Wrote software for communications between data acquisition equipment and personal computer. Tested diagnostic system in commercial buildings. Set up data acquisition equipment, downloaded data and used diagnostic system to identify HVAC system problems such as malfunctioning economizer and oversized cooling equipment.
•    Commercial building passive solar analysis
Used commercial building energy analysis software to analyze cost-effectiveness of passive heating, cooling and daylighting applications in small commercial buildings for U.S. Air Force planning guide. Complied results in full-color guide that helps designers understand relative energy uses by building type, e.g. warehouses, offices, auditoriums.
•    Residential energy analysis
Performed building energy simulations for research, algorithm development and design guideline development. Collected and analyzed data for comparison of monitored data to building energy simulation predictions.
•    Residential energy analysis program development and training
Developed residential energy rating software and energy calculation software in various roles over five years, including programmer, researcher, user's manual writer and editor, project manager, and training seminar developer and presenter. Managed various projects including Colorado home energy rating system, Energy Crafted Home program developments (for northeastern states), and energy analysis manuals for U.S. Air Force housing. Also worked on several projects preparing training materials and presenting training seminars for home energy rating programs throughout the country.

Performed contract computer and building automation system programming and consulting for Johnson Controls and various building owners including: Two United Bank Center, Republic Plaza and VA Hospital. Analyzed commercial building energy utilization. Performed economic analyses for various energy-saving retrofits, including demand limiting, cooling system changes and lighting system changes. Initiated demand limiting program on building automation system which significantly reduced electrical demand and costs.

Set up energy calculations and conservation strategies such as chiller optimization, optimal start, and demand load management.
